TURNING ON THE LIGHT

 

Where This Started

A very dear and wise friend once told me when I refused to open up to her..she said, “Susan, when you turn on the lights, the cockroaches scatter.”

I just looked at her bewildered like what the heck are you talking about? 

So, here is what all this means. Do you have a secret  (or are just misbelieving that you are unworthy) you have come to believe is so dark and despicable that if you told someone they would obviously run away from you as fast and far as they could?

Well, first off we all do. 

 

The Lies of The Darkness

It’s because we are all human and sinners and we have all made mistakes and the world and the darkness loves to convince us that those things make us so ugly, unlovable, and filthy that we have to keep it to ourselves. 

It wants us to believe that we are the one thing no one could stomach. We are the one that is so unlovable, unforgivable, so ugly that we will forever be rejected.  We are alone in this.  No one will understand.  Everyone will reject you.

However, have you ever had such a vivid nightmare that everything in the nightmare was exactly like it is in real life, unlike other dreams? You know like you and the other people in the dream actually look like they do in real life and your home is really your home? When you wake up you are so disturbed and unsettled you actually are scared and don’t want to talk about it because you aren’t sure what is real?

 

Turning On The Light

But, what happens if you start to talk about the dream out loud to someone? It starts to sound a little bizarre and even silly right?

Well, that’s because you have turned the lights on in your dream and the cockroaches have begun to scatter.

Think of the lights like truth and the cockroaches as lies. What happens when you walk into a dark room and turn on the light? If there are roaches they scurry away and the darkness is almost immediately relinquished. 

The same is true with speaking your truth (that you believe to be so heinous it’s the one thing that will keep you unloved) out loud and watch the darkness of it fade away. It’s not so scary after all. Ok. You said it. You didn’t die. You are free. You are FREE!

Find a trusted friend that loves you through and through or a good counselor and try it. Speak the truth out loud…turn on the lights.

Watch the darkness begin to quickly fade away.

 

The Cockroaches Scatter

And know this. You are NOT the sum total of your mistakes and screwups in life.

You are so much more special and beautiful than that. The mistakes and screwups were lessons that molded you to become a stronger and better person.

They do not define you. They do not describe you. They do not damn you.

Forgive yourself.

Look in the mirror.

Speak truth.

I am alive.

I have breath in my lungs.

I am so much more than I imagine.

I am loved.

I am treasured.

The God of the Universe Created ME!

Jesus gave up everything for ME!

Your life does matter and those things you are believing about yourself (if they are deceitful lies from the world) simply aren’t true. Those things that did happen to you and hold you in the grip of fear and keep you from being FREE need to be spoken into the light.  Get busy turning on the light!!

Speaking Truth actually GIVES LIFE and SETS YOU FREE!

What if speaking truth out loud actually meant saving someone’s life?  Think about it for a second. 

If someone is on the brink of suicide or some other heinous thing they can never turn back from, and all because they are being held captive by the fear, shame, and lies that are drowning them into the darkness?  

What if that person found you or me and spoke their truth out loud….they have been hurt, abused, damaged, are in a dangerous situation, full of the belief that the world is better off without them, and there is no hope?  

Then, what if, as that person is speaking their darkness out loud into the light, they watch your face be empathetic and kind while listening?  

What if afterwards, they realize the world didn’t open up and suck them into some hateful abyss that they had believed for so long would happen?  What happens when they realize they just spoke their darkness out loud and the earth didn’t shake, their whole world didn’t crumble, and you or I didn’t run away from them?  

They just turned on the light and the lies, darkness, painful, controlling cockroaches ARE SCATTERING!!!

Let the healing begin! FREEDOM is near! The lights are on!

You are Special and Beautiful, and the Pain is to mold and shape you, not melt and break you.  Don’t keep your pain locked inside.  Your beautiful story and all the jagged pieces are like the beauty of a stained glass window.  It’s not meant to be packed away in an attic somewhere. It is meant to be pieced together shared and appreciated by the world.  Only then can the light shine through your beautiful stained glass work of art that is your unique, one and only, Pricelessly Valuable LIFE.
