Get Ready! FALL IS HERE!
Fall is the ABSOLUTE best time of the year, in my opinion, of course. We have many favorite family traditions!
I am sure that part of my reason for loving Fall so much is having, for the most part, always lived in the South (and mostly the deep south), the sweltering heat and humidity coupled with the seemingly endless supply of stinging and biting insects make for a pretty miserable 9-10 months of the year!
That being said, Fall, to me, is the promise of a break…the promise of a little bit of a respite from the same old same old. It gives my mind and body pause to take a step back and take a breath and think deeper.
As the temperature only approaches 89 instead of 110, it calms my body, mind, and soul a bit and gives me hope. It encourages more time outside and time spent in nature. It coaxes me out to the patio to have my coffee and maybe even start making a hot cup of joe instead of my homemade cold brew! The colors (in the stores here, not the leaves) begin to change and it’s comforting and warming to the soul. Maybe the reason the colors are so warm in the fall (oranges, browns, grays, off whites, purples) is because it is cooling down outside.
Fall is when we finally get to pull our jeans and boots out of the storage, and if it gets a little bit cooler, maybe even our hoodies! There is something about being wrapped up that just feels like home. Maybe it is because being covered and wrapped and enveloped is what we all long for? When I think of my children and what they love in the morning is a big enveloping type bear hug and they don’t want to let go. When I get cozy in my bed, I want the covers all over me and snuggled. If I am reading a book on the couch or outdoor couch, I must have a blanket to feel cozy.
When I think of Jesus, I imagine what it will be like when I finally get to meet Him face to face and for some reason, I imagine running into His arms and feeling that warm comfort like a soft blanket on a cool fall morning all around me and just sitting in His presence on His lap as His child. Maybe that’s what it all comes full circle to? Maybe the being wrapped up in warmth is all about pointing us towards Him who wants to wrap us in His unfailing Love and Mercy.
Although we don’t get to see leaves changing colors here or get to have lots of cool days, there is something about the change of seasons that you can almost taste in the air. We love to decorate and celebrate the season no matter if it “feels like the season” or not.
The reason we do this is quite simple: never wait until you FEEL like doing something or most likely nothing will ever get done. Whatever you do with your actions, your heart will most likely follow, and if not, think of it as a gift to your family.
Without further ado, let’s jump right into 7 Favorite Fall Traditions whatever your family looks like right now!
7 FAVORITE FALL FAMILY TRADITIONS
1. Pumpkin Patch
We love finding a pumpkin patch and letting the girls pick out a pumpkin. In our family, they carve it with Daddy. This is something they look forward to all year long and they get a little silly and crazy with their designs and carving.
2. Fall Festival
We also enjoy finding a good fall festival and having some family fun that way too. There are so many to choose from where we live now, and our favorite one keeps even the adults on their toes. The one we frequent has massive corn mazes, so big that they have to have spotters up in crazy high towers to be able to get you out of there should you get lost, which is a real possibility. There are jumbo 30 foot slides made out of pvc pipes, human size hamster wheels made out of culverts, pig races, and so much more! Edited since we have moved again since the original publishing of this article to add that while we don’t have a plethora to choose from anymore, we have found one that we are super excited to try out and all you need is one anyway right?! Or even make your own fall festival in your backyard and invite neighbors over to play!
3. Starting our Wassail Tradition
For our family, wassail is a part of our all holiday season long tradition, but it starts in the fall, and I can never mention it enough! Some people refer to it as hot cider, but growing up my mom called it wassail. Here is the link to grab the recipe! Not only does it fill the house with these amazing natural aroma, but it’s for drinking too! We always put the first pot of wassail on when the first coolish day comes. You could come up with your own family tradition of when the first pot of wassail of the season goes on the stovetop.
4. Start our Mornings Outside.
Once the temps drop below 80 here, then we like to begin our mornings outside. It is such an incredible change for us when this happens that we are drawn outside for a break from norm. The best part is to start our day there, whether that’s coffee on the patio while watching the kids scooter around, or working on an article while they are doing a school project, it matters not. What does matter is simply getting outside to breathe in the cooler fall air.
5. Press leaves.
OK I know this sounds silly and crazy, but in our family, it’s something that simply never gets old. When you think about it, and look at this beautiful picture for the article, how could it ever get old? Each leaf is so different and unique. Now, the reason this is so special to us, is because again, we don’t actually get to see many, if any, changing leaves, but if we do see one with a little color in it instead of just dead, the kiddos snatch it up, gently hold it while greatly admiring its beauty and rarity and bring it inside to save. We then press it and save it!
6. Decorate for Fall!
So often, fall gets lost in the shuffle when it comes to decorating and celebrating. Many people jump forward to Thanksgiving or even Christmas. Fall is the break. Fall is that breath you have been waiting for to take. Fall should be celebrated. You can CLICK HERE to read about great Fall decorating ideas.
7. Finish Christmas Shopping.
Try to focus on joyfully, and in a fun way finish up any remaining gift shopping for the holiday season now before it gets crazy busy in the stores and you end up spending your holiday season in the stores and missing it entirely. It’s such a joy and relief to get it done by now, so that you truly get to be present in the days to come with those you love, celebrating what really matters…each other.
