This article isn’t about the benefits of the sun or Vitamin D and we won’t dive into the benefits or not of sunscreen here either. This article is solely diving into if you already have a sunburn.
So, that being said, let’s skip the pleasantries and head right for the subject matter at hand.
THE PROBLEM
You, or someone you are trying to help, has a new sunburn. The sunburns we are talking about here are new burns that are only from the Sun.
THIS METHOD WILL NOT WORK FOR OTHER TYPES OF BURNS. This will also NOT WORK on open blister sunburns either.
I just wanted to clear that up so that there is no misunderstanding.
My children tend to burn in that very delicate area under their eyes and across their nose as well as their shoulders and upper back. I used to burn all the time all over as a kid and I wish I had known then about this super simple, effective, healthy way of healing a sunburn!
If a sunburn is not tended to in the pretty immediate future, it tends to peel, blister, and even get worse as it continues to burn, cause pain as well as itching and keeps damaging the skin in the process.
THE SIMPLE SOLUTION!
Well, my mind was officially blown when I not only found out about this about 6 years ago but saw it work IMMEDIATELY in our own family. This definitely meets our standards here at The 365 Family for a simple solution that works across the board!
They are such inexpensive products that you may already have in your home that can provide immediate relief, and reduce and lessen the sunburn altogether.
There are 3 amazing components here:
2. Water
THAT’S IT!!!
I am hoping by now you want to skip straight to the process of how to do it….so we will in just a sec, but first the science behind it all.
THE SCIENCE
What an unattended sunburn does to the skin:
when left on its own, the reason the skin will eventually itch, and peel and possibly blister is due to the fact that the body is trying to rid itself of the sun-damaged cells. The burn sometimes won’t show up until a few hours or even a day or two later.
The combination of the cold water and Apple Cider Vinegar does multiple things:
- The cold water is soothing, helps stop itching, and also tells the blood vessels to shrink back down.
- The apple cider vinegar kills germs, relieves pain, helps stop itching, and helps to restore the ph of the skin.
The coconut oil accomplishes so many jobs when it comes to sunburn aid:
- It has incredible permeability. It is able to penetrate the cell membrane. This oil goes deeper than most other oils penetrating that burnt layer to be able to get those wonderful healing properties of the MCFA (medium chain fatty acids) to the underlying skin where it needs it most. It will get under those burned layers and help protect those layers from any further damage.
- This beneficial oil also has anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial properties which help protect this vulnerable skin during this time when it can be prone to cracking and open to pathogens.
- It also has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that help “cool” the skin.
- Coconut oil also has a relatively good Vitamin E level which is an excellent skin healer naturally as well as will help to combat the damaging process naturally.
OK…yah..yah…enough about the science and let’s get straight to the reason you came here.
The Best Natural Sunburn Remedy That Works!
THE PROCESS.
1. Grab a towel or washcloth. This will solely depend on the size of the area that is sunburned. If it is just a small area on the neck, then a washcloth will do, but if it is your entire back or front, then you need to snag a big towel. This should go without saying, but be sure this towel is completely clean and sanitary. We are dealing with damaged skin that is susceptible to whatever we put on it. So, no that towel on the floor won’t work. So, you have your clean towel ready for work.
2. Soak that towel or washcloth in cold fresh water. When I say soak, I mean it…this towel should be completely soaked with cold or cool fresh (preferably filtered if possible) from the tap water. You should have to wring it out it’s so wet.
3. Splash a bit of Apple Cider Vinegar on the towel. OK so I know this is not an exact ratio here, but again, it depends on the size of the area and the towel. If I am using a washcloth, I like to just pour a capful of apple cider vinegar and drizzle it across the wet washcloth. If I am using a towel, probably 5-6 capfuls or so. Find the ratio that works for you.
4. Lay the towel on the affected area and let it stay there until the towel itself gets warm or the person says it’s no longer cool. Keep repeating this process with new fresh water and more apple cider vinegar over and over again for a few times in a row.
5. Once done with the treatment, remove the towel and let the area air dry. This step is super important because you do NOT want to wipe this area dry. The body needs to absorb the rest of the apple cider vinegar, evaporate or absorb the remaining water, and the skin shouldn’t be irritated by the rubbing.
6. Once dry, apply the Coconut Oil and let it absorb. The Coconut Oil is the final step in this process and a super important one. Apply the coconut oil starting off small. Because of the high MCFA content, it will feel super slick, but it’s important to gently massage this super oil into the affected area. No need to be rough, but gently rub the coconut oil all over the affected area. Try to also let this area air dry for a bit as you don’t want to put on clothes right away over the area so that the skin can absorb what it will for maximum benefits.
That’s It. Then Repeat This Process As Needed Every day for a few days or until the sunburn is gone.
