The Subject
Heads up guys…this is NOT a post about the pros or cons of eggs. This is NOT a post about saying you should or shouldn’t eat eggs or use them.
We personally DO eat eggs presently, and there have been times in our lives when we didn’t eat eggs as well.
This is quite simply a post about an amazing simple and healthy EGG SUBSTITUTE for baking.
Whether it’s because you have an egg allergy, or you ran out of eggs in the house while baking, choose to stay away from eggs, or just want to mix it up and try something a little different, here you go!
I came across this egg substitute 8 years or so ago. So it definitely qualifies for us as a simple solution that is time tested and super easy to implement for anyone! This is the best simple and healthy egg substitute for baking that we use on a regular basis and our whole family loves!
Ready? Let’s get started!
It’s all about the Flax Seed!!!
First off, let’s dive into why Flax is important to have in your diet anyway.
The Health Benefits of Flax Seed
Flax Seed (also sometimes referred to as linseeds) are small, brown or tan seeds. They are super high in omega 3 fatty acids, although not the same type as fish have, but a great plant-based source of those necessary fatty acids for our brain and heart health.
It is also a powerhouse of dietary fiber, magnesium, and thiamine.
Because it is high in both soluble and insoluble fiber, this means while it is helping to detox your colon, it also keeps your nutrients in your stomach longer to absorb more of them while helping you feel full longer as well as regulating your sugar cravings as well.
Another health benefit of Flax Seed is the ALA fats in this little mega food! Alpha Linoleic Acids can improve the hair and skin by boosting the essential fatty acids and B vitamins necessary to the skin and hair for moisture and health. Are you struggling with dry skin or brittle hair? Add some flax seed to your diet! You may be surprised at the little improvements along the way.
High in antioxidants, both types of dietary fiber, numerous vitamins, and minerals, gluten-free, and a heart-healthy friend to all, Flax Seed is one little guy you definitely don’t want to leave out of your everyday diet.
How To Take Flax Seed
Flaxseed is more beneficial (and how you have to use it here anyway) when ground into a powdery consistency, often referred to as flaxseed meal.
You can do this simply in your blender, or you can simply buy it this way. The reason they are more beneficial like this is that they will just pass right through your body if taken whole and you won’t get to reap those awesome benefits that little powerhouse has to offer you!
We tend to do both…buy it as a seed and grind it up, or in a pinch, buy the already ground kind. Whatever your choice, be sure to only use the flax seed meal!
What Recipes Can I Use This in?
To be honest with you, we have found this egg substitute to work amazing in any baking recipe and with no strange or weird taste as well.
Our whole family enjoys these baked goods without ever knowing the difference.
I have also baked many recipes over the years for parties, pot lucks, and get-togethers and no one could tell the difference.
How do I make This Replacement?
The Flax “Egg” Replacement
Items Needed:
small bowl
small sturdy whisk
tablespoon measuring utensils
flax seed meal
warm water
The Steps:
- Measure and pour into the bowl one tablespoon ground flax seed meal.
- Measure and pour into bowl 3 tablespoons warm water.
- Whisk it together hard but for only a few seconds.
- Let sit on the counter for about 5 minutes while it forms a gel-like consistency.
- Use as ONE EGG and enjoy!
*The Above Recipe makes ONE EGG replacement. Double or triple or more for whatever your recipe calls for.
** It is perfectly normal if there is a little water still sitting as a film on the top when you go to pour into the main recipe you are making.
Our family has enjoyed making almond butter cookies with these, cake recipes, and so many other delicious healthy treats. We hope your family enjoys this simple healthy egg substitute for baking as much as ours has over the years.
